Eugene “Pebbles” Akiwumi is a British-Ghanaian filmmaker, photographer, director, and producer based in Stockholm.

His passion for visual storytelling began at the age of six, when his parents gave him his first film projector. At thirteen, he received his first camera, and from there, he was off. As the child of a United Nations diplomat, Eugene grew up in several countries, where his parents introduced him to different cultures, communities, and ways of life. This upbringing shaped his curiosity and the way he understands and captures the world.

One of his most significant influences was the Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Peter Magubane, a family friend who helped deepen Eugene’s appreciation for photography and its power to tell meaningful human stories.

Eugene’s work spans commercials, music videos, documentaries, portraiture, social-impact films, and fine-art photography. His notable projects include the 1992 World AIDS Day commercial Make Love Not Aids, collaborations with Soul II Soul and the UNHCR, documentation of Ghana’s 2012 presidential elections, and photographic work exploring places such as Cape Coast Castle.

Moving between film and photography, Eugene is drawn to people, memory, culture, and history. For him, carrying a camera is not only part of his profession. It is a way of connecting with people, understanding the world, and preserving moments that might otherwise be forgotten.
